FaceBook… Friend or Foe?

Once again my lovely wife is right. “You really need to update your Blog” she said the other day “Why do you have it if you’re not going to keep up on it”? Uh I dunno, probably because I have a bunch of other stuff to do that I think is a little more important than writing my thoughts or feelings on a subject” I said. But since I have this blog, I probably should listen to her like a good husband should and write something, but what? I know…

Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, Blogs… it seems that for whatever reason with all of these ”sharing websites” available to everyone with a computer and internet access, Iphones, Itouch, cell phones etc, people seem to think that sharing what THEY do and what THEY say and what THEY think and what THEY are doing should be more important than anything else, Imagine that.

Now I’m not saying keeping up with friends and family aren’t important, but it seems that this whole “networking” thing is going way overboard. People texting while they’re driving, employees checking their messages while they’re suppose to be helping you, umpires at softball games checking and texting between innings… all true stories. I remember this past summer as I coached my daughters softball game, the umpire (a high school kid) couldn’t wait for the teams to get out so he could text back to his friend!

Friends, things have gotten out of hand and we’re ALL to blame because in one way shape or form, if we don’t participate we condone it. Sure I have these accounts like everyone else, and I check my accounts once or twice a week to clear the junk of and rarely post anything, although because of The radio station, I have said I am going to start getting on a little more to communicate with the listeners.

It was interesting the other night, my wife shared with me her desire to shut down her FaceBook account. I asked why? She said “You know I will sit and read my Bible (my kids, wife and I are doing a Bible read through this year) and I read the chapters that I’m scheduled to read for that day, but as soon as I’m done I can’t wait to get back on FaceBook… Why? It’s just people talking about themselves and maybe some gossip, but I find myself wanting to see what they’re doing. Imagine if I took that time that I’m on FaceBook and get into my Bible more”.

But then something interesting happened, she said “What if I took and posted scripture on FaceBook and share Jesus with people”? I thought there you go, share Jesus with those on the site and make it a better place. The thing is, come to find out my oldest daughter and her friend were already posting scripture. Imagine that, a couple of 13 year old young ladies who love Jesus sharing scripture to a couple hundred friends on FaceBook, how incredible is that! Hmmm?

Ok, maybe I stand corrected from my opening statements. And maybe… just maybe, if we all work together and start sharing HIM instead of THEM, the world and FaceBook might just be a better place.

Until next time… God Bless

I heartily agree with you! I, too, do not get on my Facebook page very often. But I have family members who seem to always be on there in their spare time. They have the farms, and the fish, and all the other applications. I really don’t see the point in this. I do like Facebook, because I’ve been able to contact friends whom I haven’t seen since High School! Its nice to know what they’ve been up to.

I have discovered that there are worthwhile applications, though! There is a Daily Scripture page that you can subscribe to, and it posts scripture to your page every day! There have been many days that I read what was posted and think, “I am so glad I read that! That’s exactly what I needed to see today!”

I have also started to post interesting things that I come across on the internet. Creation Moments. Wow. So interesting to read, and I just have to share these tidbits with my friends!

Instead of posting my thoughts on myself, I try to post what I’ve learned from my studying the Word.

So, I agree that we should try to use these public forums to promote the LORD and HIS love!!!

      Thanks Kristina,
In reference to your Daily scripture, Creation Moments and the like. I’m starting to see more and more of it and what I’m hoping is those of my “Friends” on Face Book that may not have a relationship with Jesus Christ might start reading and checking these things out and maybe… just maybe they’ll make that change in their lives. Thanks for the comment, have a great day!
      God Bless,
      Tim
